Planned IKT service shutdowns
As part of the IKT development trend, partial redundant architecture network and server systems are implemented at CZU. Due to the nature of the IKT architecture and in the redundant system, some administrative or security interventions may cause it to fail, and it is therefore necessary to plan service shutdowns. Last year we spent almost 1,000 hours of work time during outages, and thanks to this care, we have achieved very good infrastructure reliability as a whole over the academic year of the university.
OIKT therefore proposes the implementation of a pre-approved IKT service shutdown plan at CZU, which will take into account both the working time of employees and the time schedule of the academic year. The main purpose of such planned shutdowns of information and communication technologies is prevention, and to maintain technologies in working condition through regular prophylaxis. This approach makes it possible to prevent and minimize unexpected outages of IKT systems, and it is also therefore easier to plan the administration of primarily critical systems in pre-established time segments. The schedules of planned prophylactic shutdowns do not necessarily mean that all of the systems will be unavailable for the duration of a service shutdown. Employees will be informed in advance about the unavailability of specific systems via e-mail.
The proposed shutdowns are:
Shutdown of minor significance ranging from one weekend in the month from Friday at 20:00 to Monday at 06:00
There may only be short-term disruptions of systems, services, or shutdowns of CZU local substations as part of checks and patching. The time span is of major importance in the field of prophylactic checks of local substations with an impact on only a small part of CZU employees and worksites.
- configuration modification – optimization, restart of application or services
- upgrading of device firmware, installation of fix packs, and new versions
- exchange of local active elements of the network of substations
- prophylactic check of local substations
- cleaning of active elements, dust filters and ventilation openings
- optimization of substation cabling
- check or exchange of UPS, calibration, UPS self-test
- documentation, mapping of network and individual systems
Shutdowns of minor significance can be chosen at the discretion of individual faculties and have an impact only on a particular territorial unit, i.e. only local substations and end stations of users, whose outages does not affect the operation of other buildings and centralized systems. Each faculty can choose any date. If several faculties choose the same date, the relevant date will be bound to individual priorities according to the specific needs of the situation. Employees will be informed in advance about the unavailability of a location via e-mail.
Shutdown of major significance from Friday at 20:00 to Monday at 06:00
- more demanding configuration modifications
- more demanding upgrade of device firmware,
- exchange of HW/SW technology,
- data migration,
- transition to new IS version,
- implementation of new HW/SW technology,
- shutdown of backbone components for a prophylactic check, upgrade, or exchange,
- shutdown of servers and server rooms for the purpose of cleaning, installation or assembly
- shutdown of backbone UPS for the purposes of a prophylactic check
Shutdowns of major significance have a global impact and affect the entire university. All university components must agree on these dates. Within a given timeframe, no service availability will be guaranteed and any associated outages will be within a relatively long period of time that require the relevant performance and work procedures.
